The date of her birth is 29 March 1985 in Roswell, New Mexico. Gerina Michelle Mendoza has been her birth name. Gerina Stevenson was born in Mexico to Mexican parents Alan Stevenson and Rita Stevenson. Stevenson is American and comes from a Mexican-American background. From a young age her drive to become active in sports was strong. Gerina began playing golf at the age of 15 years old. Gerina finished her high school studies in Goddard High School. In high school she won at the New Mexico Golf State Tournament. As a volleyball player, she also competed in state competitions. She was enrolled at Texas's University of Texas, Texas in the academic year. She took home all the events she took part in throughout her senior year. In her time at college she won her Conference USA Player of The Award and the UTEP Female Sports Athletics Award.
